Seasons are changing, and so should your products

As temperatures drop this coming season, you may find that your once holy-grail products are lacking in performance. Just like you would switch out your lightweight linens for thick knits this fall, it is vital that you do the same with your everyday beauty routines for optimal results. No matter the climate, it will always affect your skin and health—and not always for the better. Blistering hot days bring unwanted sebum production and acne-prone skin, while bone-chilling days gift us with dry, itchy patches and irritated skin. Changing your products will only ease this transition.

Swapping your lightweight fluid moisturizer, for a thick cream is a great start to avoid the disadvantages of cooler weather. However, simply changing your cleanser can make a huge difference. Instead of continuing the use of your foaming, acne-fighting cleansers, upgrade to an oil-based or milky cleanser to truly reap the best benefits. Both oil-based and milky cleaners are among the most gentle options and prove to soothe any dry, itchy patches or irritated skiing that will inevitably harsh your mood. Dr. Peter Matravers, Senior Vice President at Arbonne, explains: "Products containing oils can be beneficial because they can help to create a layer on the skin that helps to retain more moisture on the skin by creating a protective barrier." But most importantly, DO NOT FORGET YOUR SPF! One of the biggest misconceptions and beauty faux pas is SPF... or lack thereof. Cloudy grey skies are no match for the harmful UVA and UVB rays. They will always find a way to creep up on you, making SPF a definite fall/winter essential.

Body lotion can really go either way, you either love it or you hate it.  Whether you are a fan of moisturizer or not, it is a lifesaver during colder months. Dry, rough skin is never a preferred choice, so it is important to maintain it properly. If you do happen to have a strong aversion to moisturizer, fear not, there are a multiple of options out there for you. You can never go wrong with Khiel's classic Creme de Corps. While on the pricer side of the spectrum, this rich and fast-absorbing body cream will last you for months on end... and keep you unbelievably soft. This ultra-lightweight version from Sebamed is best applied fresh out of the shower for maximum benefits. Once absorbed, it is nearly undetectable and will last you well throughout the day. However, this "ideal body" moisturizer from Vichy takes the cake in the formulation. What seemingly looks like your run of the mill body moisturizer from first glance, turns into an emollient oil, making the ideal moisturizer. And, if you want to go the extra mile, exfoliation is your answer. The pile-up of dead skin cells can often times leave the skin looking lackluster and dry. Exfoliating during these next few months will only keep your skin radiant and glowing (this applies to the face too). If you are a beginner, try this exfoliator from Avène. It is formulated for sensitive skin and will provide a gauge of the amount of exfoliation your skin can handle. Remember, less is more. If you are feeling extra, this Aesop body exfoliator will not only scrub your troubles away but fill your entire bathroom with an unforgettable aroma.

The Hair

Hair has a mind of its own. Each and every person's hair differs drastically from the next in texture, length, and color. However, there are a few simple ground rules in maintaining your locks from harsh winds and dry air no matter what category you fall into. Unbeknownst to most, exfoliators exist for your hair and scalp too! According to famed French hair stylist, Christophe Robin: "excessive washing thins the hair and irritates the scalp". A niche product as such is great for clarification of any build-up that your hair has gathered. Apply the exfoliator as you would shampoo, and watch the magic happen. Your best options are Christophe Robin's Purifying Scrub and Davine's Natural Tech Scrub Shampoo. But just like the rest of your body, intense moisturizing is a game-changer. When applied with an enough time hair masks can really refresh your 'do. Slap on a hair mask before you hit the gym or all Sunday long, and you will be amazed by the softness of your hair once rinsed out. The most economical option (and one you probably already own) is coconut oil. The many benefits of this magic oil are never-ending. But again, if you are feeling fancy, try Leonor Greyl's Masque à l'Orchidée, for smoothing, detangling, and nourishing benefits.
