Wine and art at school on a Saturday?

Snacks, free art materials, good music, and good company were provided this past Saturday, November 10, by the Wine Society and the Art Club as they kicked off their first event of the year with their annual Paint and Sip. The event took place in the Combes building, with thirty students attending.

Paint and Sip started two years ago, but last year was a huge success. There was an outpour of students that RSVP'd, but the cap was only 15 students. This year, however, Wine Society and Art Club collaborated together to produce a larger event to welcome 30 students. Halid Chrisinas, a senior at AUP, founded the club three years ago. He said, "I founded this club when I realized we're in the city of Paris, which is like the Mecca of the arts. So, I felt AUP needed an outlet for artistic freedom." Halid explained that the club has grown since then from four or five people to 10-20 in attendance per session.

Caelin Paterson, a sophomore at AUP and the new president of Wine Society, has also experienced an influx of interest in her club. This year, her goal is to expand the club. She said, "this year we're planning to hold bigger events more frequently. Last year the club was successful, but now we want to make events bigger to allow for more students."

Caelin explained that she plans to bring in wine professionals to help educate about the wines for the coming academic year, saying, "It's great to taste it, but it's even better to know what you're drinking and where it came from." Caelin also shared that whiskey and cognac tastings are also in the works for future events.

The two clubs plan on collaborating for much more events next semester. Alex, a freshman and Paint and Sip attendee, said the club is a great way to get to know the community. "When you move somewhere new, it's a great way to meet new people and try new things in a space where you can express yourself freely, in a care-free atmosphere," Alex said.
