Hang Loose at France's Annual Surf Competition

Surfers from around the world visit the Basque region of France this October.

Interested in going to the Basque region of France and watch some surfers hang loose on their boards? From October 4 until October 15 Quicksilver and Roxy Pro France will be hosting the ProFrance Men and Women's surf competitions in Soorts-Hossegor, a small town about 20 km north of Biarritz. The dudes will be competing for the Quicksilver champion title and the dudettes for the Roxy champion title. Gabriel Medina and Tyler Wright, last year's champions, are returning to this year's competitions to defend their world titles.

The surfing event is the region's main tourist attraction during the second half of the year and is not to be missed. Getting there is easy, so grab some friends, a board and turn on those good vibes for the competition, it only happens once a year. During the day you'll be able to relax at the beach while watching the pro's rip it up, eat delicious healthy food and soak up the surfer lifestyle. During the night there will be after parties at bars and clubs for everyone to de-stress.

Ways to get there:

  1. Train: The closest train station to Hossegor is Labenne and train tickets from Paris do not exceed 75€. When arriving at Labenne you can either take a 15-minute Uber ride to Hossegor or take the line 7 bus that will take you take you directly from the train station to Hossegor's center.

  2. Plane: Plane tickets can range from 110€ to 180€. If you do decide to take a plane, the closest airport to Hossegor is Biarritz Anglet Bayonne Airport. When arriving you will either have to take a 30-minute Uber ride or take bus line 14 from the airport directly to Hossegor.

  3. Car: If you have or rent a car it's a simple drive there, the trip is about 8 hours long. 

Where to stay:

  1. Airbnb: There are many Airbnb options available in the town and the average cost of an apartment is 35€ per night.

  2. Hotels: Hotels will definitely be more expensive than an Airbnb but almost all of them are located in front of the beach. The best hotels in the area when referring to location, quality and affordability are: Logis Lacotel, Le Pavillon Bleu, Hotel Le Mercedes and Le Relais du Lac.
