Overalls Are Making a Comeback
Paris Men’s Fashion Week has come to an end and brands like Egon Lab and Maison Margiela stole the show as unisex labels. During Fashion Week, we are introduced to both new and old trends for the upcoming seasons. Although overalls never really disappeared, they are making a trend comeback for both men and women.
Overalls were introduced in 1873 by Levi & Strauss to serve as durable protective clothing for men working factory and farm jobs. Throughout time, overalls have evolved from being functional workwear to a closet staple you can dress up or down.
Magdalen Kligerman, a fine arts student at the American University of Paris, who owns four pairs of overalls, all different colors, says she chooses them because of their “ease”. She considers overalls a trend, but thinks “a lot of people don’t have the courage to wear them or don’t think they can pull them off. I would associate overalls with certain social circles like skaters.”
Overalls may be more commonly worn by younger age groups or those who represent skater culture. They are often associated with prominent skater brands like Dickies and Carhartt. Over the last decade overalls have become a part of mainstream fashion. Today, overalls can be found at fast fashion brands such as H&M, Zara, Urban Outfitters, and Brandy Melville.
These once solely functional items can now be found at high end stores and boutiques as well. Stella McCartney sells the classic overall look for 600 euros. Kendall Jenner, who has promoted the trend in multiple Calvin Klein campaigns, as well as Justin Bieber, Jaden Smith, Luka Sabbat, and Anward Hadid are commonly photographed in overalls.
Overalls are now becoming an important item in the wardrobes of those other than skaters. They come in many different styles and colors so anyone can easily rock this look. Don’t be afraid. Throw some on and get buckled up!
