Nail Trends for Spring 2020

By Coco Wagner

With the spring season just around the corner, new trends in fashion, hair, makeup and nail art are flowing in. Nail art as an art form started to boom in the 2000s and quickly became a way for visual artists to work on 3D surfaces. This allowed nail enthusiasts the opportunity to carry a piece of art with them temporarily. Here are some of the top nail trends for Spring 2020, inspired by both the runway and Instagram nail artists.

The New French Manicure

What has been perhaps the most recognizable nail look for the past 50 years is now having another big moment. Originally created in Los Angeles by Orly nail polish founder, Jeff Pink, the French manicure has become a staple in Hollywood since the 1970s. A new take on the classic French manicure leaves the classic white behind, introducing metallic and scalloped tips. These fresh takes don’t stray too far from the timeless design, but this remix adds a touch of modernity.

Designer Inspired

Nail art is moving towards more minimal design. Artists such as Betina Goldstein and Imarni Nails have drawn inspiration from designer wallpapers, color palettes from recent Fashion Weeks, as well as minimal takes on logos to create a fresh take on a designer nail. The minimal designs are elegant and easy to wear for day to day nails. On the runway, designers opt for more minimal accompaniments to their collections, while others such as Oscar de la Renta and Jeremy Scott opt for brighter colors and geometric shapes to compliment their looks.

Negative Space

Negative space nails are making a case for the barely-there look. Similarly to fashion, this nail trend is all in the detail. It focuses on a variety of designs (dots, stripes, shapes, etc.) painted over your natural nails or a nude coat. Because of the simplicity or lack of the base coat, it allows for seamless growth between appointments.
