Exposing yours ideas is terrifying but invigorating.

Last week, the AUP's Film Department held it's annual Student Film Festival showcasing student short films and documentaries from the past school year. The program was a curation of student film submissions from courses including Principles of Video Production, Directing Fiction, Making a Documentary and Senior Projects.

Film Professor Marie Regan and Student Film Representative Lyzbeth Lara worked extra hard to make the evening a special one and provided wine, cheese, fruits and other refreshments. Nine films were shown (disclaimer: including a few of my own) each bringing their own unique style and esthetic to the screen. Each student stood up after their film was presented and acknowledged the audience's applause.

I can tell you from experience that having your own project shown on a big screen in front of an audience of your peers is terrifying but invigorating. You can feel your heart pounding and can only hope that your work will be well received. As a creator, it’s easy to get stuck in your own head, hate your projects and want to bury them deep to never see the light of day, but to be vulnerable by putting your work out there, even if its just in your school, is exhilerating. To receive feedback and compliments from people who appreciate you and your work motivates you to keep going.

I would encourage you to sign up for any (or all) of the film production courses mentioned above if you have a cinematic idea that's been bouncing around in your head. If your interested in having your film shown, the Student Film Festival takes place every year in the spring semester. Just go for it and be vulnerable, you won't regret it.
