Fashion, Feminism & Dior

With her latest couture collection Maria Grazia Chiuri takes us into a new era of Dior.

Keeping up with creative directors is not as easy as keeping up with the Kardashians. Since fashion never stops, creative directors move from house to house along with a suitcase full of ambitions and ideas.

One loaded suitcase belonging to the Italian fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri traveled from Milan to Paris - to the Dior headquarters on the Avenue Montaigne to be precise.

Christian Dior is one of France’s most prestigious fashion houses and stands for many years of creative inheritance that have shaped the unique DNA of the house.

Monsieur Dior, who founded the house in 1946, knew what women wanted and created a "New Look", which would reestablish Paris as fashion capital after the Second World War.

His "New Look" did not only free women from their post-war uniforms, but celebrated femininity and extravagance. A-Line dresses and the famous Bar suit were a part of Dior's claim to fame.

After 70 years of male creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first female in charge of the house. After working at Valentino with Pierpaolo Piccioli for 17 years, she left her home country to begin her reign at Dior.

In January the Italian designer presented her first couture collection. The Musée Rodin set the stage for fairytale forest Snow White herself would have felt at home at. Models in long chiffon skirts and extravagant headpieces flew down the moss green runway.

Chiuri believes that couture is all about dreaming and fairytales. She transformed this belief quite literally, but nevertheless successfully into a magical collection.

While we were all shocked about Raf Simons abrupt exit, Chiuri has demonstrated in only six months that it was time for a Dio(R)evolution. Within the past two seasons Chiuri has brought a youthful and modern touch to the brand.

The Italian designer, much as Christian Dior's redefinition of femininity in the 1950s, discovered that today's spirit evolves around womens rights in the age of globalization.

Quoting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on a simple white T-Shirt turned into one of the most wanted statement pieces of the season. It captured the spirit of a new generation in a very simple yet dynamic way.

Chiuri's bold take on womens fashion brings new energy to the prestigious fashion house. The crème de la crème of the bloggers and street style crowd is wearing her designs. Memorable slogans, sassy logos and dynamic silhouettes attest to Chiuri's tactfulness for our time and her wish to leave her mark on the house.
