Sports, style, and culture have been dressing each other for over a century, and the tunnel is the new runway

What is ‘game-day’ attire and why should we even care about it? Well for decades athletes have been dressing up for the arrival of game day. During the late 19th century and through the 20th century, high-fashion sportswear was known as an umbrella term for clothing worn by athletes. Overtime sportswear symbolized status and high fashion, which later transitioned European culture to American culture regarding the fashion industry. Parisian tennis players Jane Régny and Suzanne Lenglen were early sportswear courtiers.

During the 1990s, trends started to shift regarding the outfits athlete’s graced fans with on game day. Sports became a space for self-expression for athletes allowing them to use fashion as another playing field. Athletes pushed the boundaries on fashion and even made it a part of their brand. The on-court attire and walkout kits made a statement that professional players have a say on their style, not just their athletic performance.

The relationship between Parisian luxury and athletic performance reached its absolute peak during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The LVMH group was one of the major sponsors of the Paris 2024 Olympics, sponsoring athletes competing at the games for the first time. This collaboration translated the importance of fashion in sporting events and its presence in French culture.

Fashion student at AUP, Brana Georgiev expressed her opinion of fashion and sports today. “Now big brands represent and sponsor the players and teams allowing for fans to participate in on the trend and join them.” Georgiev stated. “I think it is a good idea that fashion, and sports are blending together because it allows different sides of the industry to come together for those that are interested in both.”

Sports style is all about how players look and carry themselves, from their clothing and accessories to their overall personal style. In the 1990s, athletes around the country became more indulged in hip-hop music. Many athletes started to embrace similar fashion styles such as baggy clothes or gold chains based on what they saw their favorite artists wearing. The intersection of hip-hop and sports culture in the 90s saw athletes embracing fashion styles shaped by the music and culture around them.

In turn, professional athletes such as football player Deion Sanders and basketball player Dennis Rodman started to incorporate their own personal touches into their game-day fits, both on field and off the court.

In today’s era, sports and fashion have become very intertwined amongst both men’s and women’s sports. Fans and spectators are eager every week to see what their favorite players and teams decide to show up wearing, whether they wear an unconventional outfit or a tailored suit. It’s the players themselves who believe a great fit can set the tone before a game. “It’s like I put on a costume,” Dallas Cowboys linebacker Von Miller told ESPN. “It gives me a different energy, a different spark.”

It's not only athletes in the major professional sports leagues (NBA, NFL, European Football) that show up and show out on game day with their outfits and performance. The 2026 U.S Open just came to an end, yet, solidified its status as a premier fashion event.

One of the other major sporting events in the U.S. is also worth looking at. On the court, two-time U.S. Open winner Carlos Alcaraz stepped out wearing a yet-to-be-released ensemble from the Nike x Travis Scott ‘Cactus Court’ collection. Naomi Osaka showed out on the court yet again in a custom Thom Browne creation and custom Who Decides War creation. Osaka went with an all-white Thom Browne overcoat in white silk gazar with matching belts. The outwear was embroidered with tiny white and silver tennis rackets and featured a pleated skirt as well as athletic mesh inserts.

Internationally, professional sports players influence on modern sportswear is immeasurable. David Beckham, former Manchester United soccer player transcended what men’s fashion looked like. From all-black leather two-piece suits to all-white bedazzled ensembles. He killed the stereotype that anyone who enjoyed the game couldn’t indulge in fashion. Beckham’s openness to the world of fashion helped him gain recognition and, eventually, turned him into an ambassador for global fashion. Working alongside major fashion brands like Armani.

It is of no surprise that world-famous sporting events have a seemingly endless number of big-time sponsors. With millions of watchers at home and hundreds of thousands in attendance there is no shortage of viewers and no denying the spread of content across all platforms.

As high viewer sports events, brands want players to represent them on the largest stage. Many athletes also have their own brands or collaborate with other fashion brands now, merging audiences from both industries. Hence the extravagant custom-made outfits presented.

As mentioned earlier, American football is one of the most popular sports in the country, and when it is football season, everyone is tuning in from everywhere to see some of the most fashionable athletes in the game. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs football player is known as one of the most fashionable athletes to roll up at stadiums. Travis puts a lot of thought into choosing the perfect pre-game or post-game outfit, devoting as many as three hours. He shows up to game day wearing designer pieces from Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Amiri. His unique fashion sense creates commotion whether his outfit is off the charts or down right outrageous.

On a similar track, the WNBA has experienced a massive increase in popularity thanks to athletes like Angel Reese. The Chicago Sky basketball player became the first female professional basketball player to ever be on the cover of an American Vogue issue as well as attending the Met Gala and being a part of the Host Committee, where attendees expressed themselves through fashion. The Met Gala is not only about fashion but about narrative, performance, and self-expression on one of fashion’s brands biggest nights. She also walked the Victoria’s Secret runway making a big statement showing that all bodies, especially professional athlete’s bodies, are considered fashionable.

For decades, the fashion industry had one answer to the question of cultural visibility: the runway. Magazines, photography, campaign ads, celebrities, the red carpet, film, street style are all areas of visibility that fashion and sports have bled into. Sports have been in the spotlight since the beginning, but in the last decades their level of exposition to consumers has become bigger.

Paris has served as the ultimate canvas where athletic utility and high fashion collide. As a historic capital of style, the city has spent over a century transforming utilitarian sportswear in global luxury trends, a phenomenon frequently celebrated by institutions like the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Luxury and mass-market brands are converging on the same activation playbook, that cultural relevance at major sporting events now matters more than price tier or brand pedigree. Athletes generate measurable brand value and trend signals that reach global audiences faster and more authentically than traditional campaigns, with 87% of consumers more likely to purchase products endorsed by athletes they follow.

Sports institutions and the fashion industry are so integrated into society and culture that it makes perfect sense for them to intertwine almost perfectly. This intersection explores a new avenue for ideas and innovation for both designers and athletes alike, and these industries have evolved and will continue to do so. Athletes will continue to push the boundaries of fashion to demonstrate their own self-expression.

Wearing and feeling comfortable in the clothes you have on allows you to be yourself fully. The fans get to see players express themselves through what they’re wearing and their style, one gets to see people’s personalities through clothing. And, over time, players have taken more pride in how they show up for work. “Dressing the same isn’t special. Being in a designed suit by a master craftsman is truly special,” Lebron James told The New York Times. Prominent sports stars such as Venus Williams and Dwane Wade stepped out sitting from row at the Lacoste Paris Fashion Week 2026 show. Athletes will continue to play a significant tole as trendsetters, impacting both sportswear and mainstream fashion.

With the seasonal shift in sports and fashion, fans of both can turn on game days as an unofficial runway and see how their favorite athletes dress and express themselves.
