"Essential" Fitness

An essential employee is grateful to be living a "normal" life during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has billions of people around the world exercising within the confines of their homes. However, eating healthy and keeping up with a fitness routine becomes increasingly difficult under quarantine conditions. From friends and family to Olympic athletes, people are uploading at-home workout videos on social media for others to find inspiration and follow along. My friend, Elizabeth Wilkens, finds herself in a unique situation. Authorized as “essential” personnel due to her job as a driver for UPS, Elizabeth has time and space (thanks to the recommended social distancing precautions) to work and work out.

Elizabeth feels blessed to be in her position, “I know there’s a lot of people struggling right now so I’m not only thankful to be earning a paycheck but to live somewhere we’re still allowed to exercise outside.” With a goal of improving both physical and mental fitness, Elizabeth focuses on a well-rounded weekly routine, “Some days I run, other days I do yoga, I try not to overthink anything. As long as I’m being consistent and making daily improvements then I’m happy.” She has raced in four 5K events in the last year and plans to compete in even bigger races throughout 2020, “I want to complete a half-marathon this summer and then a full marathon by the end of the year.” Elizabeth has some words of encouragement for everyone during these unpredictable times, “whether you’re working or unemployed, whether you’re working out or uninspired, take this crazy situation one day at time.” If you’re like me, you’re not sure what to think right now. Our daily lives and even our identities have been shaken up. Focus on what you have and take care of yourself and your loved ones. Health and happiness matter now more than ever.
