Event Review: Global Communications Networking Cocktail

By Isabel Guigui
Global Communications students met with AUP alumni to learn about working in the industry

Students, faculty and alumni of the Global Communications department gathered in Combes on Tuesday, November 18, for an evening of networking over drinks. Cohosted by the board of AUP Student Media (ASM) and the Office of Outreach and Advancement, the Global Communications Networking Cocktail proved a success, with over 40 members of the past and present AUP community present.  The event started at 7pm, giving the participants two hours to meet and chat.

Robin Davis, a 2017 graduate of the Masters in Global Communication and Emmy award-winning journalist, featured as the guest speaker and lent valuable insight on her launch into the working world of journalism and communications. She spoke frankly but with humor, captivating her audience with a strong narrative and a memorable phrase: "position and pivot."

Sharing her rise in the ranks at NBC Universal, where she worked for ten years, Davis explained the importance of learning to position oneself in order to succeed by anticipating the needs of her industry and taking ownership of opportunities. She illustrated the pivot through her decision to leave New York and take an unpaid internship at UNESCO in Paris, underlining the importance of remaining humble and being able to set aside ego in the pursuit of growth.

She spoke frankly but with humor, captivating her audience with a strong narrative and a memorable phrase: "position and pivot."

Davis concluded by emphasizing the need to continually step outside of one's comfort zone in order to become a stronger industry actor, and to remain open to serendipity. She closed with a quote from Oprah: "Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."

Her speech evoked some laughter, some snaps, and some goosebumps. Students largely expressed their gratitude for her candor and excitement about the event. Professors reconnected with former students and current students got to discuss with their senior counterparts working in the field. The Global Communications Networking Cocktail will henceforth take place every year.
